Banking & Post Office

Banking

There is Nonghyup Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, Hana Bank, and SC First Bank in Gongju. There is not really any difference between banks in Korea; International students may open an account in these banks, or at another bank. However, Nonghyup is more convenient because its branch office is on Gongju (Singwan) Campus.
Opening an account merely requires that you fill out one piece of paper with your passport and Alien Registration Card details. You will then be issued a bankbook and a debit card. The debit card can be used at various ATMs in Korea. If you use ATMs of the home bank, there is no charge. If you use ATMs of other banks, there is a small charge for transactions.
Foreign exchange can be done at these banks; you can cash travelers checks or cash denominations from U.S. dollars into Korean Won as well as exchange other major currencies such as the Chinese Yuan or Japanese Yen. You need your passport and Alien Registration Card. If you need other foreign currency, you will have to use banking services elsewhere, like in Daejeon. Normally, you will get better rates if you use travelers checks or cashiers checks as opposed to cash.

After you know your dormitory assignment and room number, it would be of help to include it. That way, you can receive mail straight to the dorm mailboxes. In order to facilitate the mail distribution, we recommend that you put the address in Korean too. Ask a co-student or professor to make a .jpg file and send it via e-mail. Just stick a print out on the letter.
Mail arrives daily and will be distributed into the respective college office student mail boxes (not individual boxes). Letters with dorm room numbers will be distributed to dorm mailboxes.

- Packages
For outgoing packages you can use the post office in the Amenities Building at Gongju Campus. While some incoming packages from overseas will come directly to you, there will be times when packages must be picked up in person. You will receive a note from the postal service telling you what it is you are to pick up and where it can be picked up. Since all incoming and outgoing overseas mail, both letters and packages, are subject to being scanned or otherwise inspected, be very careful what you send out and what people send you. Friends may think it is amusing to send you something questionable, but the authorities will have no such view.
